BTC Driver Trainer James Slaven Enjoys the Benefits of FLATBEDDING

James Slaven is no stranger to life behind the wheel after spending 43 of his 61 years on the road. His experience and dedication to safety make him an ideal company driver and trainer for Builders Transportation Company (BTC), his career home for the past seven years.

“Builders is a great company -- they really have been good to me here,” says Slaven. “BTC always gets me home and pays me well – that counts for a lot. I’m glad I can represent the company well and share what I know with new drivers.”

As a trainer, Slaven says he takes his time to make sure his students learn the ins and outs of flatbed hauling. “BTC’s training program is four weeks of hands-on training so I can make sure that driver is ready for the job.”

Slaven says he appreciates the open communication he has at BTC. “The staff at BTC is really great. If you ever need to talk through something or voice a concern, they’ll do whatever they can to work it out for you.”

Slaven makes his home in Mississippi where he enjoys time with his children and grandchildren. “I’m home every weekend. Drivers who want to stay out longer can do that but I like that regular schedule,” he says.

Owned and operated by the Phillips family since 1961, BTC offers a variety of career opportunities for company drivers, owner operators and recent school graduates.

Company drivers at BTC enjoy every weekend at home plus paid vacation, paid orientation, weekly direct deposit, referral bonuses, and runs primarily in the Midwest, South and Southeast. Owner operators at BTC can also expect to be home every weekend and earn industry-high rates.

TRAINER PAY PACKAGE

Trainers get paid an additional $.02 per mile.
Trainers also receive $.02 per mile for every mile an upgraded student runs for up to 1 year.
If an upgraded student achieves the quarterly incentive bonus, then their trainer will receive an additional 10% of the student’s bonus.

TRAINING PROGRAM TIMELINE

Student will spend the first 3 days receiving classroom instruction and hands on securement lab training.
The student will then be assigned to the over the road trainer for a minimum of 4 weeks. The student must be willing to stay away from home a minimum of 4 weeks while with the trainer unless the trainer lives near the location of the student. BTC will cover the expense of the student’s hotel stays over the weekends.
